Cicadas

The second loudest noise in the forest (the first being the silent fart that isn’t quite silent enough when you are in your tent in close proximity to fellow campers) is Cicadas.

There are millions of them here and they make a right racket, especially in the plantation forests. Their life cycle is amazing in that they live underground for 17 years feeding on the sap in tree roots and then emerge simultaneously to climb the tree and shed their skin emerging as a mini beast from pre-history, they then sing/rub/vibrate or whatever it is they do to themselves to death trying to find a mate. It’s the males that make the incessant noise, the females respond with clicks similar to clicking you fingers, I’ve seen David Attenborough click his fingers near the males and the randy critters tried to mate with his hand, when I tried it they turned away in distaste!

I’m just glad for our human race that cicadas keep themselves to themselves. If you think flies are bad imagine if cicadas were buzzing around and vomiting in your dinner instead!
