Phew! my anticipated “easy day without the rucksack” has gone by the by. This Bream Head route is bloody steep in places and it’s not just one mountain to go up its 3. There are just so many wooden steps that kep going up and up, turn a corner, up and up, turn a corner, up and up, turn another corner … you get the picture! Think the tops are over 400m high which may not sound much but it is from a sea level start.
Ocean Beach was spectacular, so empty on the main stretch too, but once again I made a bad decision. when I came across a stream on the beach it was too deep to ford and i couldn’t be bothered taking my boots off so headed up stream to see if could find shallower spot on some of the spongiest grass in the world. After a belligerent half an hour i came to an abrupt halt as another river blocked my both, both were brown and deep now and I saw some ripples which must have been made by something big and slimy like an eel so that put paid to any intention of wading across and back I had to go to where I’d started from and took my boots off!
There is something about walking long distances on beaches, Ocean ?Beach is about 7km long but like 90 mile beach even when you get your head down and put on the pace when you look back up you don’t seem to have moved. I also started to get a niggle in my right thigh, it’s still hurting now I’m off the beach so will have to keep my eye on it. It may be because the beach is slightly sloping and more pressure is going on the right leg, maybe?
Max and murray kindly dropped me off at the Kauri mountain track just before 9am, Murray was going to cycle back while Maxine walked to the bach to pick a few bits up before driving back. They have been so accommodating it’s untrue and have said to ring when need picking up at the other side but I will try and hitch so to save them coming all the way out.
Yesterday was a nice break from walking, spent morning trying to work out where i’ll be when Chris comes out in mid Feb, looking like either Te Kuiti or Taramanui. This all seems a long way away.
Marie says she is missing me which is nice, i miss Marie and the girls heaps but I’m trying hard not to so that I can get the most from the experience of being here doing something unique.
