4pm Waikenae Library
Well we are certainly making the most of our return to civilisation. Just booked into a hotel, we’ve had a colossal lunch from the supermarket (on top of the pies and a sausage roll). Lunch comprised of pizza bread, blue vein cheese, smoked mussels, potato salad, Greek salad, bag crisps, pot of dip, grapes, yogurt and kiwi fruit. Hardly touched the sides!
We were just about spent after the four hour descent from Pukeatua to the road. We’d been walking a few hundred metres along the road when a car approached and I think I just may have stuck my thumb out. It was the NZ post guy and he offered us a ride on his tail gate to the next junction (about 5km). And then we had not even walked 200m when Mandy, a local farmer, and Tom and Quinn, her lovely dogs, stopped to offer us a lift into town (Chris denies sticking his thumb out so at least this is well with my road walking policy). Mandy was great, she gave us tips on the best coffee and sausage rolls as well as where to shop and directions to camp site and wished us well. So here we were before midday with a lot of R and R to do after the survival of the Tararuas!
Everything we craved is here in town. The library to do my blog, cafes, supermarket, liquor shop, even a cinema. How sweet this all seems. Flush toilets and mirrors are so lovely too (not the images in the mirrors when looking into them though so Chris “Gandalf” is going to shave and I’m going to get my hair cut at the mobile barbers once I’m washed and showered).
