Day 76

Midnight in Petone

For once a day of little walking! I have been on a bike though, 2 bikes to be precise. One was Felisa’s bike when Barry and I cycled to Petone only to find the local cycle shop in liquidation, and second on Barry’s bike when I went cost up buying new bike with gear at a couple shops in Lower Hutt.

how cool do i look!?

The two bike shops were pretty similar in price coming in around 1200 dollars for bike and all the kit. I’ve therefore decided to take my chances with a bike advertised on Trade me (NZ eBay equivalent), this is currently being ridden by Amy, a Canadian girl, who is touring on it over in the South Island. Its an Avanti Blade road bike and comes with all the gear – waterproof panniers for front and rear racks, helmet, bottle cage, lock. Spare tube etc. I spoke to Amy, agreed to buy it for around 450 bucks and we are looking at meeting up in Nelson on the 23rd. Also spoke to Lionel, my friend who lives in Nelson, to let him know rough plans so it seems my next quest is taking shape.

You’ll be pleased to hear the knee is feeling a bit better and swelling going down, it was a shock trying to pedal with it so i ended up just pushing with my left. Have bought some powerful anti flams so fingers and knees crossed!

We enjoyed duck in red wine with seasoned breadcrumbs for dinner, the ducks were personally shot by Barry when he went back to his family’s farm near Gore in Southland. Christine and her boys Sam and Joel came over too and Barry and i ended up playing dodgeball with all the boys Good fun although I was pleased to escape unscathed when it got a bit competitive! Another pleasant evenings company and so good without a TV in the house which I have noted is more common in NZ.?

Im planning to have a dose of Wellington culture tomorrow to see if it lives up to it’s “coolest little capital in the world” label. Heading in on the train and will spend most of the day at the Te Papa museum on the waterfront. A bit of cultcha!
